Welcome to the Georgia Public Library Service (GPLS) Vacuum Forming Kit page. This kit includes the Mayku FormBox, a versatile tool for creating molds and custom shapes. The kit is ideal for workshops, library maker spaces, and educational programs where users can explore mold-making, product design, and crafting.

What's in the Kit?

The Vacuum Forming Kit includes:

• Mayku FormBox: A compact and easy-to-use vacuum former.

• Clear Plastic Sheets: Starter sheets for forming molds.

• Power Cable: For connecting the FormBox to a power outlet.

• Vacuum Hose Adapter: To connect the FormBox to a vacuum cleaner (vacuum cleaner not included - we recommend a shop vac or something similar).

• Rugged Case: For secure storage and transportation of the FormBox and accessories.

Setup and Usage Instructions

1. Unpacking the Kit

   • Carefully remove the Mayku FormBox, plastic sheets, power cable, and hose adapter from the rugged case. Ensure all components are present and undamaged.

2. Setting Up the Mayku FormBox

   • Place the FormBox on a flat, stable surface.

   • Plug the FormBox into a power outlet using the power cable.

   • Connect your vacuum cleaner: Insert the smaller end of the vacuum tube into the vacuum port on the back of the FormBox. Attach the other end to your vacuum cleaner's hose.

3. Preparing the FormBox for Use

   • Turn the heater dial to select the desired temperature. The heater light will flash orange as it warms up and turn green when ready.

   • While the FormBox is heating up, prepare your template for forming. Place it on the vacuum plate.

4. Using the Plastic Sheets

   • Choose a clear plastic sheet from the pack. Peel off any protective film.

   • Lift the tray handles to release the top tray, then place the sheet on the bottom tray, aligning it with the seals.

   • Clamp the trays together by lowering the top tray and securing the handles.

   • Lift both trays up towards the heater and wait for the sheet to soften (it should become elastic and may ripple around the edges).

5. Forming the Mold

   • Pull down the trays over the template when the sheet is ready. The vacuum will activate, forming the plastic around the template.

   • Allow the form to cool for 5-10 seconds before unclamping the trays and removing the mold.

6. Switching Off the FormBox

   • Turn off the heater dial, allowing the cooling fans to run for at least 10 minutes before unplugging.

   • The FormBox will automatically power off if left idle for 25 minutes.

Tips for Successful Vacuum Forming

• Remove Undercuts: Ensure templates have no ledges that could trap the plastic.

• Add Draft Angles: Slight slopes on template edges help with easy mold removal.

• Avoid Webbing: Keep templates wider than tall and avoid sharp angles to prevent the plastic from bunching.

• Center Your Template: Place it in the middle of the vacuum plate for optimal results.

Safety Precautions

• Always use a vacuum cleaner with a 2000W max rating.

• Do not touch the heater directly to avoid burns.

• Turn off the vacuum if you need to stop mid-suction using the timer button.

Maintenance Tips

• Clean the vacuum plate after each use to prevent residue buildup.

• Notify GPLS to replace plastic sheets when they start to run low.

• Store the FormBox and accessories in the rugged case to avoid damage.

Checklist for Returning the Kit

• Confirm that the FormBox, power cable, and remaining plastic sheets are accounted for.

• Disconnect the vacuum hose adapter and pack it with the unit.

• Complete the post-use survey upon return.
