Hard Drive Wiping Kit
Certificate of sanitization example
Welcome to the Georgia Public Library Service (GPLS) Hard Drive Wiper/Sanitization Kit page. This kit is designed for library staff to securely wipe sensitive data from multiple storage devices, such as hard drives and SSDs, before equipment upgrades or disposal. The kit features the SuperWiper 8" 3 NVMe + 7 SATA/SAS Portable Data Erase Unit, a powerful and portable tool for data erasure that complies with NIST 800-88 standards.
What's in the Kit?
The Hard Drive Wiper/Sanitization Kit includes:
SuperWiper 8" 3 NVMe + 7 SATA/SAS Portable Data Erase Unit: Supports multiple erase protocols and can erase up to 19 devices simultaneously.
Power Supply and Cables: Universal auto-switching power adapter and various connection cables.
Storage Adapters: Includes adapters for connecting SATA, SAS, USB, NVMe, and other supported devices.
Rugged Case: For secure transport and storage of the unit and accessories.
Setup and Usage Instructions
Unpacking the Kit
Carefully remove the SuperWiper unit, power supply, adapters, and cables from the rugged case. Verify that all components are present.
Setting Up the SuperWiper 8" Unit
Place the SuperWiper on a flat, stable surface.
Connect the power supply and plug the unit into a power outlet.
Attach storage devices using the appropriate adapters (SATA, SAS, USB, NVMe). For NVMe SSDs, use the U.2 extension cables to avoid direct port usage and reduce wear.
Power on the SuperWiper, and the touchscreen will display the main menu.
Erasing Drives Using the SuperWiper
Tap on the "Detection Screen" to view connected drives. The unit will automatically detect the attached storage devices.
Select the drive(s) to erase and choose an erase protocol:
DoD 5220-22M (ECE): Seven passes followed by verification.
DoD Lite 5220-22M (E): Three passes followed by verification.
Security Erase and Enhanced Security Erase: Efficient protocols for SATA drives.
Sanitize: Three options for SAS SSDs.
NVMe Format/Secure Erase: For NVMe SSDs.
User-Defined Erase: Customize the number of passes and verification.
Start the erase operation, monitoring progress on the screen. The unit supports running multiple independent sessions simultaneously.
Verifying the Erase Process
Verification is crucial for NIST 800-88 compliance. The SuperWiper includes automatic verification for certain protocols.
You can run additional verification if needed, especially for drives previously erased by other methods.
Exporting Erase Logs and Certificates
After the erase process, export the erase logs and certifications to a USB drive. These can be saved in NIST 800-88 format for compliance records.
The SuperWiper includes options for customizing log file names based on drive serial numbers, date, or user input.
Supported Erase Protocols
DoD 5220-22M (ECE): Seven passes, then verification.
DoD Lite 5220-22M (E): Three passes, then verification.
Security Erase: Uses the drive's firmware for data erasure.
Enhanced Security Erase: Writes pre-set data patterns.
Sanitize (SAS SSD): Three types available.
NVMe Secure Erase and Format: Three options for NVMe drives.
User-Defined Settings: Custom parameters for erasure.
Example Use Cases
Data Sanitization Before Equipment Disposal: Erase old hard drives to comply with data protection policies.
Data Sanitization Before Equipment Sale: Wipe sensitive data from drives before selling equipment.
Bulk Data Sanitization Projects: Quickly erase multiple drives at once to reduce downtime.
