Filtering Via Chrome Management Console

Chrome has some options for built in basic filtering in the admin console. Click the title links to learn more.

SafeSites URL Filtering:

Can be found under "Managed Guest Session Settings" and "User & Browser Settings" near the bottom of the page. Setting the policy controls the SafeSites URL filter, which uses the Google Safe Search API to classify URLs as pornographic or not.

SafeSearch:

Can be found under "Managed Guest Session Settings" and "User & Browser Settings". Setting the policy to Enabled means SafeSearch in Google Search is always active, and users can't change this setting.

SafeBrowsing:

Can be found under "Managed Guest Session Settings" and "User & Browser Settings". Safe Browsing is a blocklist service that shows users a warning message before users visit a dangerous site or download a harmful app.

YoutubeRestrictedMode:

Can be found under "Managed Guest Session Settings" and "User & Browser Settings". Setting the policy enforces a minimum Restricted mode on YouTube and prevents users from picking a less restricted mode.

Alternative Filtering for Chrome OS Devices

Here are a few programs providing additional filtering capabilities on ChromeOS devices:

ChromeOS Allowlist & Blocklist

You can use the admin console to block and allow specific URLs. We generally use this for configurations for OPAC and CHILD OUs. The recommended method is to block all (either by blocking "*" or "http://" and "https://"), then allow the specific domains you want.

Blocklist:

Under "Managed Guest Session Settings"

Blocklist:

Under "Device Settings"
