Build Instructions for DHS Kiosk

Refer here for assembely instructions for the DHS kiosks. Each step expands so you can view photos of the process as you follow along. Once the build is complete, all you will need to do is connect the kiosk to your WiFi and the device will update to the Gateway homepage.

Support information and a suggestions form can be found at the bottom of this page.

Verify all parts have arrived

Image of a large rectangular box, a passes mailer, and a lenovo chromebook tablet box

You should have 3 boxes. The large box will be the kiosk, the small bag/box will contain the extended power cable, and the Lenovo box will contain the Chrome tablet.

Open each box and remove unnecessary parts

Image of parts NOT needed including: pen, pen holder, keyboard, magnetic back, plastic kiosk surround, wall mount screws, concrete anchors and 3 ft power cable for tablet

Expand the drop down to see what equipment will not be needed for this build. Unnecessary parts include: keyboard, back cover, stylus, stylus case, and small charging cable from tablet box. From the kiosk box you will not need the plastic surround, entire bag containing yellow plastic anchors, concrete anchors, black anchor caps, and 1 set of round head screws with washers. Parts that are not needed can be stored, sent to GPLS via courier (444/111) for tech recycling, or disposed of.

LAy out the required parts for the Stand

Image of all the parts that are required to build the stand

Clear a workspace to assemble the stand and lay out all required parts.

Attach the base to the stand

Image of 4 screws going through the baseplate of the stand into the vertical signage portion

This step may require 2 people. Align the base to the vertical stand portion and hand insert at least 1 of the silver, large, flat head screws on each side. The side of the base with foam pads should face away from the vertical stand. Use the included Hex/Allen wrench to tighten down all 4 screws.

Prepare to build the shelf and gooseneck

Image of the gooseneck parts: a circular metal shelf, articulating arm, "x" bracket, and required screws

Lay out the circular shelf, gooseneck, X bracket, and screws to build the shelf and prepare to attach the tablet enclosure.

Align the shelf to the gooseneck

An image showing the circular shelf upside down balanced on the articulating arm

Stand the gooseneck vertically on a table, then place the shelf on top with the side that has foam pads facing up. Align the 4 holes at the center with the 4 holes in the gooseneck. It should balance freely.

Attach the shelf to the gooseneck

Image showing the 4 screws being installed to connect the circular shelf to the articulating arm

Using 4 screws (small, silver, flat head), attach the shelf to the gooseneck and tighten with the included small Hex/Allen wrench. Flip the shelf and gooseneck over.

Align the X Bracket to other side of the Gooseneck

Image of the X bracket being attached to to the other side of the articulating arm

Place the X bracket on the other side of the gooseneck, with the V shaped (countersink) screw holes facing up so that the screws will insert flush with the bracket. Align the 4 small holes in the center with the 4 screw holes on the gooseneck.

Attach the X Bracket to the Gooseneck

Image of all 4 screws installed in x bracket, securing it to the articulating arm

Using the remaining 4 small silver screws with a flat head, attach the X bracket to the gooseneck. Use the Hex/Allen wrench to tighten. If the screws stick up from the surface, remove them and flip the bracket before reattaching.

Prepare tablet enclosure

Using the keys taped inside, unlock and open the tablet enclosure so the top folds towards you. Remove the foam and place in the enclose as shown in the photo to the left. If you haven't already, pop out the circular plastic camera cover in the upper left and discard it as well as the flat plastic square.

Align the enclosure to the X bracket on the Gooseneck

Balance the tablet enclosure on the X bracket and align the 4 holes in the middle of the enclosure to the holes in the X bracket. Grab the 4 small screws with a round head and matching 4 nuts.

Attach the enclosure to the X bracket on the Gooseneck

Image of a pair of pliers holding a nut and the allen wrench needed to tighten teh screws that secure the clamshell to the X bracket.

You will require pliers, a wrench, or something to hold the nut while tightening for this step. Slip the screws up from the bottom through the X bracket and holes in the enclosure and attach the nut on top. Once all 4 are in and hand tightened use the supplied Hex/Allen wrench and pliers/a wrench to tighten the screws to the nut as much as possible.

Prepare the extended power cable

Image of a 12 ft USB-C power cable with male ends on both sides, one is right-angle

The cable that comes with the tablets is too short so you will need to use the extended length power cable for the next step. Get that ready by taking it out of the bag and removing the velcro wrap.

Insert the straight end of the power cable through the enclosure and down the gooseneck

Image of the straight male end of the USB-C cable being fed downt he atriculating arm via the hole in the back of the tablet clamshell

Slide the straight end of the cable down the gooseneck and out the bottom. Make sure you have at least 6 ft coming out the bottom to prepare to feed it into the stand.

slide the back sheet up on the kiosk

Image of the paper signage insert on the back of the stand being slid up most of the way in the rails

Slide the back plate/sheet up most of the way until you see both metal brackets inside the vertical portion of the stand.

Feed the cable through the top of the stand

Image showing the USB-C cable being fed down between the two signage panels of the stand

The next few steps are easier with two people. Bring the shelf/enclosure over to the stand and one person hold the shelf/enclosure while the other feeds the power cable coming out of the bottom of the shelf down through the stand. The cable should feed from the top, down between the bracket and the front signage panel.

slide the back sheet back down

Set the power cable to either side coming out of the bottom and slide the back plate/sheet back down. You should notice there is a cutout on either side that the cable can poke out of without being pinched by anything. Balance the shelf on the stand.

Align the shelf/enclosure to the stand

Image of the tablet enclosure balancing on the stand, lined up towards the front of the stand

Align the 4 holes in the shelf with the 4 holes on the top of the stand and have the folded out portion of the tablet enclosure mostly facing the front of the stand. It wont be perfectly centered but we can twist it to fit later.

Attach the shelf/enclosure to the stand

image of an allen key putting the 4 screws into the base of the circular shelf, attaching it to the vertical portion of the stand

Use the 4 large, flat, black screws to attach the shelf to the stand. Tighten the screws with the included Hex/Allen wrench.

Twist the tablet enclosure to align with the front of the stand

Image of the tablet enclosure lined up with the front of the stand

Stand on the base of the kiosk to keep it still and grab the tablet enclosure, then twist it so it lines up perfectly with the stand. See photo for how it should look.

Remove excess power cable length

Image showing the power cable excess has been pulled to the bottom of the stand

Pull the cable carefully from the bottom until you only have about 8 inches coming out of the top of the gooseneck.

plug right angle cable into left lower side of tablet

Plug the cable into the lower left side of the tablet, with the right angle/cable pointing up the tablet.

Insert tablet into foam

image of the tablet inserted snugly into the foam blocks in the clamshell

Set the tablet in the foam, you may need to wiggle it up and down or left and right to pop in. The fit should be secure, and there should be no pressure on the charging cable.

Close enclosure and lock

Image of the tablet encloser closed over the tablet

Turn on the tablet if it is off. Close the case and use the key to lock it, it will be easier if you pinch the case closed while turning the key. Put the keys somewhere safe. I recommend splitting up the 2 included keys and putting each one in a different location to minimize the risk of losing both at once.

Connect power brick and plug in

image of the included power adapter and the bottom end of the USB-C cable

Connect the Lenovo power brick to the tail of the power cable coming out of the bottom of the stand. Plug it in.

Admire your work and connect to WiFi!
